Doorway Pages
Doorway pages were once highly popular tool to get a good search engine ranking. However, they may have lost their sheen and trust of search engine crawlers in race with the newer techniques. Most of the search engines have simply banished this old world friend of web promoters. However some enthusiasts continue using this technique at their own risk.
These pages generally have loads of text and nothing but the text. No jazz, no graphics and no effects. They have several combinations of keywords and phrases repeated more than several times or usual marketing banter stuffed with key words and phrase in their different combinations. These are one-way streets, i.e. they take you to the site they are made for but once you’ve landed on the site you might not find any link leading back to the doorway page. So in a way they are undemanding warriors.
Though doorways were hugely popular as web promotion tools but not any more. As the search engine databases started getting flooded with millions of these useless pages and the more useful and relevant pages started loosing their race against them the crawlers banished them. Either these doorway pages were indexed or the sites using this technique were banned as Spam.
If it is such an eyesore in search engines’ eyes then why use them? The answer is simple. Search engine algorithms do not recognize the flashy graphics and images designed tediously on Flash, JavaScript etc. So if your website has too much of these it may rank low.
To over come this problem, doorways are the easiest and the oldest method. However, in the light of new search engine algorithms it is better to create more informative and creative content pages that have been search engine optimized. But if you still wish to use doorway pages you can follow some simple tricks to avoid the wrath of search engine crawlers.
